BOATERS HELPING BOATERS

Lack of experience and knowledge significantly contributes to recreational boating accidents each year, resulting in an average of 100 fatalities on Canadian waterways. Incidents can occur on all types of vessels, in all provinces and territories.

Common Causes of Boating Accidents:

  • Capsizing
  • Falling overboard
  • Unpreparedness
  • Collisions

Unexpected conditions like rough waters, strong winds, and engine failures, along with reckless behaviours such as excessive speed, dangerous manoeuvres, impairment and inadequate safety equipment can make an enjoyable day hazardous for everyone on the water.

With proper knowledge and preparation, boating accidents and devistating fatalities can be prevented.

We’re Passionate About Boating Education:

Since 1938, generations of CanBoat / NautiSavoir volunteers have been sharing their on-the-water expertise with both new and experienced boaters, empowering them to navigate diverse situations with safety, responsibility, and confidence. CanBoat / NautiSavoir has been providing boating courses well before the establishment of the mandatory Pleasure Craft Operator Card program by Transport Canada in 1999. We believe this program is just the beginning of what you should know when you get on a boat and why we are committed to providing comprehensive courses, created by boaters for boaters. Our students learn about essential topics such as:

  • weather,
  • safety equipment,
  • boat handling,
  • maintenance,
  • collision avoidance rules and etiquette,
  • trip planning and departure preparation,
  • skipper and passenger responsibilities,
  • environmental considerations,
  • emergency response and communication.

This approach fosters safer waterways for everyone to enjoy.

How You Can Help:

As a charitable, not-for-profit organization, CanBoat / NautiSavoir educates and certifies over 8,000 boaters each year. With 16 million Canadians participating in recreational boating annually, we have much to offer. Individual donations play a crucial role in helping us enhance and promote our services for the boating community. These contributions support the development and delivery of our exceptional and affordable courses, as well as free outreach programs, which include safety equipment checks and demonstrations, flare collection initiatives, and top-notch boating guidance.

Student Testimonials

“My husband and I have taken several CanBoat courses, and they’ve been absolutely invaluable for our boating journeys over the years. The knowledge and skills we’ve gained through these courses have significantly enhanced our boating experiences, providing us with confidence and expertise to navigate the waters more safely and enjoyably.”

“I got my ROC-M. The online course was very good and I passed the exam. Well worth having it if you need to use a radio, which is quite often on the Great Lakes / St Lawrence to speak to ports, chat with other boats about anchorages, fuel, conditions, call for help or even broadcasting a notification about conditions for other sailors.”
– I. Douglas

“On Saturday, we had a demonstration of a safety inspection on a 21 foot runabout power boat! It was very informative and was a little shocking to hear of several of the near tragic mishaps had it not been for the proper safety equipment on board and the quick action of the local Coast Guard in our area!”
